SUBJECT: CYA; or, Rather Said "We Were Misled"

1. After careful re-analysis of the documents in CBS's possession regarding George W. Bush's National Guard service 34 years ago, it is our conclusion that several of the memos we received as part of those documents appear to have been forged.

2. CBS Broadcasting Inc., CBS News, and producers of its award-winning program 60 Minutes Wednesday Edition, disavow all prior claims made or broadcast by our network that the memos in question are in any way authentic.

3. With regard to the sources of the clearly forged memos, it is the policy of our network that no source who knowingly misrepresents to it or its affiliates the truthfulness of any information which the source knew or should have known to be false, will receive the same protections our network affords honest sources of reliable information against the revealing of their respective identities. It is in the interests of those latter sources as well as our network's reputation and integrity, that we identify each such unscrupulous purveyor of false information.

4. Producers of CBS's award-winning program 60 Minutes Wednesday Edition wish to state and clarify for the record that the source of the forged memos received by this network include senior officials and advisors within the 2004 presidential campaign of Senator John Forbes Kerry of Massachusetts. Unless the Kerry campaign promptly reveals the actual names of those officials and advisors, this network will have no choice but to do so itself.

5. CBS News, along with producers of its award-winning program 60 Minutes Wednesday Edition, each regrets having been misled in this matter and apologizes to all our network affiliates, sponsors, and the American news-consuming public for not uncovering sooner the various discrepancies pertaining to the veracity of the relevant memos.

6. CBS News is committed to preventing any similar mistake from occurring in the future so as to maintain the incomparably high standard of excellence and integrity it has set for its news gathering and information vetting procedures.

None closer than your colleagues working for the Qerry Qampaign itself would be characterized by your immediate boss as "numerous credible sources who supported what the documents said.") Your statement today by no means settles this issue.
